Simon and Kevin, his father in law, had an interesting day on Tuesday at the Great British Beer Festival in Olympia.
They also visited some historic pubs starting with the Blackfriars, a historic Art Nouveau Grade II masterpiece built in 1905 on the site of a Dominican friary.
Jolly friars appear everywhere in the pub in sculptures, mosaics and reliefs. This wonderful pub was saved from demolition by a campaign led by Sir John Betjeman.
They then had the pleasure of visiting the medieval ancient cells below the Viaduct Tavern opposite the Old Baily, which is on the site of Newgate Prison, finishing off at Ye Old Mitre near Hatton Garden, built in 1547 and said to have hosted Elizabeth I dancing with Sir Christopher Hatton.
On seeing this a board Kevin wondered whether Simon was thinking of a new range for the White Lion.
